Today my heart is a little broken… I’m starting to see a a lot of VERY cheap lash extensions flood my news feed, not for the reason you think “oh Dee, your just scared of competition”. No! I’m worried that our beautiful art and industry is being cheapened and that wonderful talent artists our there are not charging there worth! 🙈 The nail industry collapsed and is now dominated by cheap fast nail bars.
People ask me why Eyelash Extensions are expensive?
An electrician would not charge $30 for a 2hr job, neither would a plumber, a bricklayer, a graphic designer a cake maker and so many other trades. Yeah right there, a dose of reality! 👊
Getting your lashes done is a luxury service.
If you go to a well trained professional, they have paid $1000s (in our case tens of thousands) and countless hours to become the incredible artist they are. 💓
As a salon when we chose to open our doors there are soooooooo many costs involved.
To name a couple… Rent, Electricity, Water, Insurance, Marketing & Advertising, Cleaning, Wear & tear on equipment , Laundry expenses, Staff amenities, Products used, Staff wages, Tax, GST, Super, Phone Bill’s, Out sourcing I.e book keepers, Education. 😅😲
All of these things are paid FIRST then me the little old owner will be able to take a wage for my first 2 years I made less that $3 an hour and worked 70+ hours a week, but I pushed though cause I love the industry and my clients. AND every single dollar went back into my business. 💸 I actually thought about closing the doors and going to work at Maccas cause I’d get paid more.
Lets do some quick math 🤓
Minimum wage for the Beauty industry is $29.92 per hour (in the NT), without any previous lash experience.
For a 2 hour set of Eyelash Extensions that is $59.64 the person should be paid plus ALL the above costs added ontop.
Reasonable, the Lash Artist should charge AT LEAST $120 to cover her costs and pay herself.
(This doesn’t include hours and hours spent answering messages and doing social media etc) then
If you ask her to charge any less, please consider that she will basically work for free to do your lashes. 🤬
Do you think she will stay in the trade for long?😢

Make a difference, if you have a wonderful lash artist whether she is a home salon or a commercial salon and every time she looks after you, does Beautiful work, sees you late nights and weekends, answers your messages late at night, charges you an infill even though you have like 2 lashes left, tell her you see her worth and that she should charge you a little more. Check out some other Australian Cities you will find classic Sets $200+ and volume $300-400+.
Darwin has some of the cheapest lashes in Australia and some of the best artists.
Look after your Lash Artist. She is worth it. I promise. And she will forever make your lashes be on point.
